Tips for Learning to Play the Piano

Learning to play the piano is a worthwhile pursuit. You can enjoy playing piano for a lifetime, whether as a hobby or even as a career. Some people enjoy the piano so much, they end up as instructors or musicians! The younger you start, the easier it will be to pick up the skill. This is why so many parents enroll their children in piano lessons. However, even if you're an adult, you can learn this majestic instrument. A good teacher and lots of practice can help you succeed no matter what age you are!

You will need a standard piano or a piano keyboard to practice on. There are lots of different options from which you can choose. If you want a traditional piano but find that it's too expensive, you may want to check into affordable financing plans, which some companies offer. Or, look for a good used piano. If you're fine with using a smaller keyboard, you'll find that you can save a substantial amount of money. These days, there are many different piano keyboards which contain all the features of a traditional piano. Most of them are easily portable, while some are even able to be rolled up for amazingly simple storage. Make sure the keyboard you select has 88 keys, which is the number on an upright and/or grand piano. You'll also want a keyboard that comes with foot pedals that can be plugged in. Whether you choose a regular piano or a keyboard piano, it's a good idea to try out the model you're considering to make sure it's comfortable before making a purchase.
After you've acquired a piano or piano keyboard, it's time to find the right instruction. You could go the traditional route and take piano lessons. This involves meeting with your teacher once or more each week for an instructional session, which usually lasts around an hour. The cost for professional piano instruction will vary depending on your geographic location as well as the teacher you select. It's crucial to practice as much as you can in between classes. Your teacher will most likely give you some homework that they feel is appropriate for your skill level to work on until your next class.

Another method of learning to play the piano is via alternate methods of instruction. This may include instructional videos or DVDs, or even web courses conducted on the Internet. If you work well on your own and are sufficiently motivated, you might enjoy these methods as opposed to traditional classes. No matter how you choose to learn piano, be sure to practice often and have patience with yourself. All your effort will pay off -- just ask anyone who knows how to play!
